Sorbian studies in Japan: trends and perspectives Summary How does it come that Japanese scholars get interested in Sorbian studies? In this paper we review how Sorbian studies emerged and evolved in Japan, centering on the humanities – especially on linguistics and literature studies. Of course, motivations to work on Sorbian studies vary from scholar to scholar. But characteristic of the situation in Japan is that along with interested Slavists, not a few Japanese researchers on Sorbian studies have begun their study with a German studies background. This fact suggests that a joint approach from the German and Slavistic viewpoints may enrich Sorbian studies in Japan. At the end of this paper, the actual list of works on Sorbian themes by Japanese researchers written in languages other than Japanese is added as an appendix

Advantages and disadvantages of interpreting as a means of interlingual communication : Perspectives from business settings

The present research is an extension of our series of previous research into the setting of business interpreting (Takahashi & Kimura 2017, 2018), and in the present paper we focus especially on advantages and disadvantages of the use of Japanese-English business interpreters. 13 business interpreters and nine clients (i.e. users) were asked as to advantages and disadvantages of the use of interpreters as a means of interlingual communication. It was revealed that besides the most basic advantage of establishing communication, there were obvious and latent advantages and disadvantages. Obvious advantages recognized by interpreters and clients include "accurate and smooth communication without misunderstanding" that is more than simply conveying the messages as well as alleviating the load of English use. Factors recognized only by one party were classified as latent or hidden advantages and disadvantages. These factors include the interpreter as someone like an ice-breaker and a proxy-interpreter for a potential make-shift staff-interpreter in the office, and costs both in terms of time and money. The findings would eventually lead to help think about the difference between human interpreters and machine interpreting in the future

Signs of De-territorialization? Linguistic Landscape at the German-Polish Border

The aim of this paper is to examine whether we can find signs of sociolinguistic transition in the case of the German-Polish border, and if yes, what kind of transition. It discusses aspects of transition at the border region from the viewpoint of the linguistic landscape. First, the significance of language for border studies is discussed. Second, the linguistic landscape approach is introduced as the means to focus on the visibility of a certain language, more precisely its graphic representation, in a given place. Third, an attempt is made to characterize the German-Polish border from a sociolinguistic point of view. Then we have a closer look at the current state of the linguistic landscape at the German-Polish border. The paper concludes that the question “Transition or not?” could be answered as “transition and not.” On the one hand, linguistic de-territorialization has led to increased permeability and liminality, although in an asymmetrical manner. On the other hand, this tendency has not yet surpassed the durability of territoriality, and a border demarking distinct language territories still endores. Time will tell whether the process of transition will continue

This article presents the latest results of research on linguistic strategies for transborder communication at the German-Polish border. First, the significance of language for current border studies in general and for the German-Polish border in particular are discussed. Then, theoretically possible strategies and their real application at the border region are presented. According to the author, alternative strategies, such as the use of Polish as a vehicular language, receptive bilingualism or Esperanto, but also supplementary utilization of language exchange, Sorbian or even Latin, can uniquely contribute to improve German-Polish contacts. At the end, the paper surveys the linguistic situation at Japanese border regions and suggests that the Central European Experiences can be useful to tackle the transborder communication challenges in East Asia

Language belongs to the essential aspects of interculturality. First we will introduce the sociolinguistic approach to interculturality, especially with regard to interlingual strategies as a field of inquiry. Theoretically, we will make use of the language management theory, which provides an integrative analytical framework that enables us to analyze the process of intercultural encounters at various levels from micro to macro. The case study deals with a German-Polish bilingual theater performance of the originally monolingual drama Die Familie Schroffenstein by Heinrich von Kleist. The alternative interlingual strategies applied in this performance, as for example receptive bilingualism, language exchange or the partial inclusion of the partner language, show innovative possibilities for the use of the German language in multilingual contexts. These strategies not only open new research perspectives, but can also be utilized in the teaching practice of intercultural German studies
